Boise School District Supports Student Exploration of Health-Related Careers

The Boise School District will hold its first Health Professions Fair on January 31st, 2018 and the timing couldn’t be better.  According to the Idaho Department of Labor and US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Health Care/Social Assistance is the #1 projected industry employment and growth area with an estimated 19,500 Idaho jobs to be added by 2024.  Additionally, 6 of the top 15 Idaho “hot jobs” (defined as most abundant, fastest growing, and highest paying) are health care related, according to the Labor Market Projections for Idaho, Industries and Occupations: 2014-2024

While many students are interested in health-related fields, they aren’t always aware of the broad range of choices available nor are they able to readily connect with experts in the field.  Health Professions Fair 2018 will provide access to a wide variety of opportunities in both informal and formal settings.

Students and parents will be able to browse kiosks, discussing programs with colleges and professionals in a wide variety of medical fields.  Representatives from BSU, CSI, CWI, ISU, LCSC, NNU, Stevens Henagar, and U of I will be available to share program information, answer questions, and provide resources. Families will also be able to talk with military recruiters regarding programs that support health professions.  St. Alphonsus and St. Luke’s staff will be on hand, as well, providing expert insight into future employment opportunities.

To provide further clarity and detail, there will also be 30-minute panel sessions. Each of these sessions will offer information and advice from doctors, health profession specialists, medical students/interns, pharmacists, counselors, nurses, career technical teachers, trauma specialists and more.  Attendees will gain insight from current practitioners, making connections and benefiting from expert advice.  Participants will be able to ask questions about junior and senior high school course recommendations for specific career pathways, career technical certificates that strengthen medical school resumes, and much more.

This open house/formal session format is designed to support stress-free inquiry into fields that students may not have thought of, as well as those they are already considering.

Please join us Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at Borah High School (6001 W. Cassia St.) from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (formal sessions begin at 6:00 p.m.) for a wonderful opportunity to explore health professions.

Many thanks to St. Luke’s and St. Alphonsus, our key partners in supporting this effort.
